Black Gold had “. . . the heart of Seabiscuit and the courage of Man o’ War.”

– Winston Groom, Garden & Gun magazine, 2008

Keeping with the successful tradition of books that weave American history, culture, sports, and larger-than-life personalities into a compelling narrative, ROSA’S GOLD does all that and more. Central to the book is the legend of Black Gold, one of the most beloved racehorses in history, and only one of three horses to ever win four state derbies in a year. Adding to the legend was the subsequent mystery surrounding the theft of all of the trophies he won, including the first Golden Jubilee Cup for the 1924 Kentucky Derby and how it was finally recovered.

“Courage”

The strength of heart to do what is difficult. Black Gold was said to have ended his racing career on three legs and a golden heart, according to his jockey, Dave Emery who rode him on that fateful trip. His indomitable spirit and “courage” to prevail against all odds, will live on forever in thoroughbred history. During his short lifetime, from Feb. 17, 1921 to Jan. 18, 1928 he tallied up 4 derby wins.

The plush toy is featured in a soft, jet black material, which has just a small white blaze on Black Gold’s forelock. E.R. Bradley used to say that Black Gold’s blaze resembled the shape of a small heart. A fitting birthmark for a horse that was ultimately dubbed as The Indian Horse that had so much spirit, he finished his last race on “Three legs and a golden heart.” This plush stuffed animal comes in three versions. A child–safe version showing the blanket of roses (CH), the silk roses make up the blanket (RS), and a third version where the blanket is a silk ribbon with a rose pattern, trimmed with a black rope braid (RI).
